Answers to Chip Credit Card Questions

1. What is a chip credit card?
A chip credit card has an embedded microchip, which securely stores your card's data. A chip credit card provides greater security than a card with just a magnetic stripe as the chip makes it more difficult to fraudulently copy the details of your card.

2. What data will be stored on the chip?
The chip on your credit card will store the same data that the magnetic stripe holds. This data includes such things as cardholder name, card number and card expiry date.

3. How do I get a chip credit card?
From August to December we will send all customers a new chip credit card. Your additional cardholders will also receive a chip credit card at the same time. Once you have received your new chip credit card you should activate it straight away and destroy your old card.

4. Will I be charged any additional fees for this new card?
No, you will pay no additional charges to receive or use your new chip credit card. The normal fees and charges associated with your credit card account will still apply.

5. What will happen to my recurring payments?
Your recurring payments will continue to function as they do today. Your chip credit card will not impact them in anyway.

6. Do I need a new PIN for my new chip credit card?
No, your existing PIN can be used with your new chip credit card. If you do not remember your PIN, you can request a new one when you activate your new card.

7. How do I use my new chip credit card?
You can use your new chip credit card in the same way you use your current credit card. However, merchants across Australia will soon begin utilising chip technology, changing the way they process chip credit card transactions.

The new process will be as follows:

  1. The merchant will insert your chip credit card into the EFTPOS terminal
  2. Your card will remain in the terminal throughout the entire transaction
  3. You can then choose to sign the receipt or enter your PIN for verification
  4. Once the transaction is complete the merchant will return your card

8. Can I continue to use my chip credit card by just swiping the magnetic stripe?
Yes, in Australia you will still be able to use your card by swiping the magnetic stripe at an EFTPOS terminal.

9. Can I use my chip credit card at the ATM?
Yes. There is no change to the way you use an ATM in Australia or overseas. Simply continue your ATM banking requirements as usual.

10. Do other countries have chip credit cards?
Yes, secure chip technology and chip credit cards are fast becoming the global standard in the effort to minimise card fraud. Chip cards are prevalent in countries in Europe and Asia.

11. Travelling overseas?
As many countries have now fully migrated to use secure chip and PIN technology, it is strongly recommended that if you do not know your PIN, you request one prior to travelling overseas. We recommend this because in some countries, a transaction performed with a chip credit card can only be completed with a PIN and not a signature.
